Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe to Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the first child of six. The music passion of her father and his collection of records in the family room were an enormous influence on Nancy as a young girl. By the age of four, she knew she wanted to be an artist. She began to develop her talent by singing in choirs at church. While still in high-school her appearances in Skyline Melodies. That same year, Nancy began to perform in nightclubs. Following her graduation from high school the 17-year old Nancy was enrolled for a semester at the Ohio's Central State College now Central State University prior to leaving and becoming a professional singer. In 1956, she made her debut record in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with who she performed on tour between 1956 until 1958. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made when she was a member of the Carolyn Club Big Band. Cannonball Adderley encouraged that she should move to New York to further her professional career. She moved there to The Big Town in the year 1959. Within a short time she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company heard her sing and immediately agreed to sign her. It was a contract with Capitol Records in the year 1960. That year, she released her first single. Guess Who I See Today? Capitol released five Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. The first was focused on R&B, but under Adderley's influence, she started to take on jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley joined forces in 1962 and allowed her to climb the charts. In 1963, she achieved her biggest hit through Tell Me the Truth. In the year following it led to her being booked at New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
