Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe. She was the daughter of Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was one of six kids. Nancy's father was an avid music lover and played records in the family. This had a great influence in her early years. When she was young she was already able to establish an idea of who she was as well as what she hoped to accomplish. The church choir helped develop her talent. After high school, she began to appear regularly in Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when won the TV talent show. That same year, Nancy began working at night clubs. Nancy was 17 when she graduated from high-school and matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for one year, before deciding to pursue a career as a musician. The first album she recorded was in 1956 with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. The band was on tour with her between 1956 and 1958. Nancy made her debut album on Dot Records during the time she was with the group. Cannonball Aderley suggested she make the move into New York so as to enhance her career. In 1959, Nancy moved to The Big Town. After a few weeks the manager of Adderley saw her performance and decided to hire her. In 1960, he signed her to Capitol Records and in that same year she released her first single. Guess Who I See Today? Capitol issued 5 Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. The first was focused on R&B however, under Adderley's influence, she started to take on jazz. Nancy Wilson's collaboration in 1962 with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top of the charts, and the year 1963 saw her scoring her first hit Tell Me the Truth. Following that year it led to her being invited to the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
