Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson who was an ironworker in Chillicothe on 20 February 1937. The mother of her child, Lillian Ryan worked as household helper. Nancy Wilson was the only baby of six. Nancy was extremely influenced when she was a young girl by the music her dad was a fan of and played at home. At the age of 4years old, Nancy was aware she would be a singer. She was able to develop her talents by singing with the choir of her church. At the age of 16, she began to appear frequently in Skyline Melodies. She was fifteen when she won the television talent show. In the nightclubs she started singing at the age of fifteen. Nancy at the age of 17, had graduated high school, and then matriculated in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to sing. In 1956 she released her debut album in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with who she performed on tour between 1956 between 1956 and 1958. While in the group Nancy recorded her first album with Dot Records. Cannonball adderley advised her to travel for a trip to New York in order to increase her fame. She visited The Big Town, New York in 1959. Within a month she got an offer to sing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road in The Bronx where Adderley's agent heard her and signed her. The contract was signed with Capitol Records in the year 1960. That year, she debuted with the song. Guess Who I See Today? Capitol Records came out with five Nancy Wilson albums over a time span of 2 years. Initially focusing on blues and rhythm under Adderley's influence she moved away from R&B as she embraced music from jazz and torch. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley joined forces in 1962 and led to her rise up the charts. By 1963 she had the biggest success with Tell Me the Truth. The performance helped her land a gig at New York Coconut Grove in 1963, America's most popular nightclub.
