Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah - is an American performer, actress and a singer. Her performance as a singer, music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has earned an impressive two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is an Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. as a police officer and Rita teacher in Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was just 10 years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic school within Newark New Jersey. Latifah is a word that means gentle and generous. Her cousin gave it to her at the age of eight years old. Always a tall girl the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward for her basketball team in high school. The play she played in her high school, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was a beatboxer in her band, the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah became a member of the original Flavor Unit group, made up of several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created an audition for the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. Her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
